Dhaka, Nov 17 (V7N)- The UK is closely observing and supporting Bangladesh's democratic transition under the leadership of interim government head Dr. Muhammad Yunus, British Under-Secretary for Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS) Catherine West has stated.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Towhid Hossain at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, West expressed the UK’s commitment to aiding Bangladesh’s aspirations for democracy and stability.

"We are looking to Professor Yunus to articulate his vision for Bangladesh’s democratic future," she said, adding that the UK will provide support based on the interim government's requirements. She highlighted the importance of political compromise and equal opportunities for all political entities to participate in the democratic process.

When asked about discussions surrounding the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who resides in the UK, West clarified that no specific issues were addressed. "We want to support the interim government's efforts during this transitional period and the initiatives they are undertaking for national reconciliation," she explained.

This visit marks West’s second to Bangladesh, the last being 11 years ago. She expressed optimism about the interim government’s commitments to peace, accountability, and reconciliation, emphasizing the UK’s strong friendship with Bangladesh.

In their discussions, West and Hossain explored various collaborative opportunities, including trade, security, migration, climate change, and the Indo-Pacific strategy. On this occasion, she also announced an additional £10 million in aid for the Rohingya crisis, underscoring the UK’s dedication to supporting vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.

The visit reflects the UK’s continued partnership with Bangladesh as the country navigates this critical transitional phase.
