Baku, Nov 18 (V7N)- Chief Advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus , has accused former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of inciting instability in Bangladesh through statements made from India. The allegations were made during an interview with Al Jazeera , conducted on the sidelines of the COP-29 Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The interview, aired on Sunday, addressed the political tensions surrounding Sheikh Hasina's remarks and their implications for Bangladesh. Dr. Yunus alleged that Hasina’s calls for protests in Bangladesh from Indian soil were "harmful" and that a formal complaint had been lodged with India over the matter.
Dr. Yunus stated, "She is trying to destabilize Bangladesh by making provocative statements from India. We have informed the Indian authorities, saying, 'You are providing her shelter, which is your prerogative, but please ensure her activities do not harm us.'”
This comes amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh, where Hasina's Awami League remains vocal despite her absence from the country.
The interview also referenced a statement issued by the Awami League on Shaheed Noor Hossain Day (November 10), in which Hasina was referred to as the "Prime Minister of Bangladesh." When asked about this, Dr. Yunus responded, "She can call herself many things, but the reality is different. Even India, which has given her shelter, recognizes her only as a former Prime Minister."Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since stepping down under contentious circumstances. Her political activities, including alleged calls for mobilization from abroad, have drawn criticism from the interim government, which is tasked with stabilizing the country ahead of elections.
Dr. Yunus's remarks underline the strained relations between the interim administration and the Awami League, with growing concerns about external influences on Bangladesh's domestic politics.
The Indian government has not yet commented on Dr. Yunus’s allegations. Sheikh Hasina and her party have also refrained from issuing an immediate response to the interview.
