Dhaka, Nov 23 (V7N) – The newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four Election Commissioners (ECs) are set to take their oaths of office on Sunday.
According to M Shafiqul Islam, the Public Relations Officer of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, the oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Judges' Lounge of the Supreme Court at 1:30 pm. Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed will administer the oath.
Appointment Details
On Thursday, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed former secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the new CEC, along with four others as ECs, under Section 118 (1) of the Constitution. The newly appointed ECs include:
- Former Secretary M Anwarul Islam Sarker
- Retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman Masud
- Retired Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad
- Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Sanaullah
The Cabinet Division issued separate gazette notifications confirming these appointments.
Selection Process
The appointments were based on recommendations by a six-member search committee, formed in line with "The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022." The committee, led by Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, was established on October 29 to recommend suitable candidates for the CEC and EC positions.
