Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) — Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasised the integral role of the hilly regions in the development of Bangladesh, stating that bypassing these areas would impede the nation’s progress. He delivered this message on Sunday in anticipation of Chittagong Hill Tract Day, observed annually on December 2.

"One-tenth of the country's total area is inhabited by people from the hilly regions," Dr. Yunus said. "To preserve the natural beauty of these districts and expand the tourism industry, various reform initiatives have been undertaken in collaboration with local communities. These efforts aim to reduce unemployment, accelerate economic development, improve living standards, and eliminate social inequalities."

Highlighting the importance of collective efforts, Dr. Yunus called for unity to sustain peace, harmony, and progress for all residents of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. He expressed his happiness over the annual celebration of Chittagong Hill Tract Day and extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the people of the region.

The Chief Advisor also commemorated the historic 1997 peace accord signed between the Government of Bangladesh and the Chittagong Hill Tracts People's Association, describing it as a significant political milestone aimed at fostering harmony and resolving long-standing issues.

Dr. Yunus reaffirmed the interim government's commitment to building a new, discrimination-free Bangladesh while maintaining communal harmony.

Concluding his message, he wished for the overall success of Chittagong Hill Tract Day and encouraged continued efforts to ensure equitable development for all.
