Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) – Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has called for comprehensive reforms to Bangladesh's criminal justice system, describing it as "broken" and incapable of ensuring justice for all suspects.
In a Facebook post from his verified account on Monday, Alam emphasized that decades of injustice have been perpetuated by custodial torture, forced confessions, and a corrupt, politically influenced police investigation process.
"The most pressing need is to repair our broken criminal justice system so that justice is guaranteed for every suspect," he wrote.
Alam highlighted the alarming issue of custodial torture and the coerced extraction of confessions to support charges, warning that this flawed system leaves everyone vulnerable.
"Without addressing these dangerous shortcomings, no one in Bangladesh is truly safe," he stated, pointing to the ease with which individuals can be framed for murder and wrongfully convicted due to manipulated investigations and public pressure.
He further stressed the necessity of constitutional amendments and the overhaul of the country's "flawed and easily manipulated" voting system.
In addition, Alam underscored the urgent need to reform Bangladesh's inefficient and partisan bureaucracy, which he views as a critical barrier to progress.
