Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) — The Ministry of External Affairs of Bangladesh has strongly condemned the planned attack on the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, located in Tripura, India. The ministry expressed deep anger over the incident and urged the Indian government to investigate and take prompt action.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, the ministry revealed that protesters deliberately breached the mission’s security by breaking the main gate, desecrated Bangladesh's national flag by damaging the flagpole, and vandalized the premises. The attack occurred in the presence of local law enforcement officers who failed to act proactively to control the situation.

The statement read, "Members of the Assistant High Commission in Agartala are facing insecurity following this heinous attack, which constitutes a violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations." The Bangladesh government emphasized that the responsibility to protect diplomatic missions rests with the host nation, urging India to thoroughly investigate the incident and prevent such occurrences in the future.

The ministry also highlighted an earlier violent attack on the Bangladesh mission in Kolkata on November 28, expressing concern over the recurring nature of such incidents.

In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed regret and described the attack as "very unfortunate," stating that diplomatic and consular property should never be targeted under any circumstances. India assured that it is taking measures to strengthen security at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi as well as its Deputy and Assistant High Commissions across India.

The incident has strained diplomatic relations between the two neighbours, with Bangladesh calling for immediate measures to ensure the safety of its diplomatic staff and missions in India.
