Dhaka, Dec 05 (V7N) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has assured that the police will not make indiscriminate arrests solely based on someone's name being included in a case, amidst allegations of false cases being filed in the aftermath of the student-led uprising that led to Sheikh Hasina's ouster.
The IGP made these remarks during a press conference at the police headquarters on Thursday.
He emphasized that innocent individuals should not be harassed or targeted, noting: “Innocent people are being harassed, fraud is taking place, and some are exploiting the situation following the events of August 5. However, there will be no mass arrests. Harassing innocent people is not the responsibility of the police. Even if someone is named in a case, the police will not indiscriminately pursue or detain them.”
Baharul Alam also highlighted the importance of professional conduct, stating that the police must treat citizens with respect and courtesy.
Addressing broader reforms, the IGP expressed optimism: “If the recommendations of the Police Reform Commission are implemented, the police force can transform into a people-friendly institution.”
He added that the police are actively working to ensure a conducive environment for free and fair elections in the country.
