Dhaka, Dec 15 (V7N) –The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated the process of bringing back approximately 100 Bangladeshi fishermen detained by Indian authorities.
Simultaneously, India has expressed its desire to repatriate nearly 100 Indian fishermen detained in Bangladesh.
Officials believe this exchange of detainees will play a positive role in easing the strained relations between the two countries.
A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “Both sides are discussing the matter. Bangladesh and India are working on the process to repatriate their detained fishermen.”
Previously, fishermen from both countries had been detained and later exchanged through established procedures.
However, since August 5, bilateral mechanisms have been nearly inactive.
The official said that the exchange of detained fishermen could have a positive impact on bilateral relations.
On December 9, two Bangladeshi fishing trawlers entered Indian maritime territory, resulting in the detention of 80 fishermen.
Earlier in September, 12 Bangladeshi fishermen were detained by Indian authorities.
Similarly, Indian fishermen have been detained at various times for crossing into Bangladeshi waters.
