Dhaka, Dec 18 (V7N) — The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has prohibited all forms of gatherings, processions, demonstrations, and similar activities in Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector-10, and areas southwest of the Turag River. The restriction comes in response to a violent clash between two factions vying for control of the Ijtema Maidan in Tongi, which resulted in three fatalities and over 100 injuries.
The DMP issued the announcement on Wednesday afternoon, stating that the order would remain in effect until further notice to ensure public safety and prevent further violence.
The clash occurred late Tuesday night between supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi and supporters of Zubair Ahmed over the occupation of the Ijtema Maidan ahead of the World Ijtema. The deceased were identified as:
Bachchu Mia (70), Egarsindu, Pakundia, Kishoreganj
Belal Hossain (60), Beraid, Dakshin Khan
Taijul Islam, Bogra
Belal Hossain succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Many of the injured have been admitted to various hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College.
Mufti Amanul Haque, media coordinator for the pro-Zubair group, claimed the attack occurred during a meeting organized by their faction.
Muhammad Sayem, media coordinator for Saad supporters, countered, asserting, "The Bishwa Ijtema ground is under our control. One of our comrades, Belal Hossain, has died."
Local sources reported that Saad followers attempted to enter the Ijtema Maidan to prepare for a five-day event starting December 20. However, Zubair supporters were already present at the site, aiming to block Saad followers from taking control.
The conflict underscores ongoing tensions between the two groups, who have been at odds over the organization and leadership of the World Ijtema, one of the largest Islamic gatherings globally.
In light of the unrest, the DMP has implemented strict measures to maintain law and order in the affected areas. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to cooperate with the restrictions.
This incident highlights the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution among the factions to prevent further violence.
