Dhaka, Dec 20 (V7N) — Consumers in the capital are increasingly worried about the rising prices of essential goods, with markets showing mixed trends. While vegetable prices remain relatively stable, the costs of rice, oil, spices, and fish continue to climb, leaving shoppers frustrated.
Seasonal winter vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, beans, and radishes are now available at reasonable prices, providing some relief to consumers. However, items like tomatoes remain expensive, adding to shoppers' struggles. The price of new potatoes has decreased to Tk 50 per kg, but old potatoes remain unchanged at Tk 70 per kg. Onions are steady at Tk 50 per kg.
The spice market has seen a notable rise in prices. Essential items like cardamom, cumin, and cloves are becoming more expensive, compounding the difficulties faced by consumers, especially with upcoming festivals.
Instability in the rice market continues, with Miniket rice priced at Tk 75 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 82. Soybean oil is being sold above the government-set price of Tk 157, further burdening households.
Fish prices have seen a significant surge, with Rui at Tk 450 per kg and Katal at Tk 480. Local koi and shin fish have crossed the Tk 1,000 mark, making them unaffordable for the middle class. Chicken prices have also risen, pushing these staples out of reach for many families.
Experts warn that the persistent rise in essential goods is having a profound impact on the lives of ordinary citizens, especially middle- and lower-income groups. Immediate measures are needed to stabilise the market and ease the financial burden on households.
