Dhaka, Dec 22 (V7N) — Interpol has issued a red notice against former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh on August 5 following a mass uprising. The red notice was confirmed by Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam, on Sunday.
The government is seeking to bring back Sheikh Hasina and other fugitive Awami League leaders by leveraging the international warrant. On November 10, the Chief Prosecutor formally requested the Inspector General of Police to initiate action for the issuance of Interpol red notices.
This follows the International Crimes Tribunal's arrest warrants, issued on October 17, against 46 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina and several high-profile leaders of the Awami League. The charges involve allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity committed during July and August this year.
Key Figures Listed in the Arrest Warrants:
Sheikh Hasina's sister, Sheikh Rehana
Cabinet members: Mohammad A Arafat, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Anisul Haque, Dipu Moni, AKM Mozammel Haque
Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy
Former ministers: Junaid Ahmed Palak, Sheikh Selim, Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh
Prominent officials: Former IGP Abdullah Mamun, former DMP Habibur Rahman, former RAB DG Harun Or Rashid, and former army officer Ziaul Ahsan
The charges include accusations of orchestrating crimes against humanity during the final weeks of Sheikh Hasina's government. The former Prime Minister fled to India amidst mounting protests led by students and the public against alleged discrimination and corruption.
Indian authorities have confirmed Sheikh Hasina's presence in the country since her departure. Bangladesh has sought India's cooperation to facilitate her return.
The red notice significantly escalates the efforts to apprehend Sheikh Hasina and her associates, marking a crucial step in the tribunal's proceedings.
