Sylhet, Jan 11 (V7N) — Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has stated that it is not possible to conduct all local elections across the country in a single day. He highlighted the challenges posed by managing elections for 12 city corporations alongside unions and upazilas, emphasizing that the process will be carried out gradually.

The CEC made these remarks during a meeting with journalists at the Sylhet Circuit House on Saturday.

Commenting on past voter ID correction irregularities, the CEC assured strict legal action against those involved in corruption. He affirmed the Election Commission's (EC) commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for ensuring proper storage and management of voter information.

The CEC confirmed that the upcoming national elections will be conducted using ballot papers, with no current plans to reintroduce Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He emphasized that the EC is taking all necessary steps to safeguard the voting rights of citizens.

The CEC also addressed the inclusion of expatriates in the electoral process. "The Election Commission is working to integrate expatriates into the voting system, and they will gradually gain the opportunity to exercise their voting rights," he said.

Regarding reforms in the political party registration system, the CEC mentioned that a commission is working on improving the process. "Once the report is received, a new plan will be implemented for party registration," he added.

The meeting was attended by local journalists, government officials, and EC employees, among others.
