Dhaka, Jan 20 (V7N) — The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been granted permission to use sound grenades and tear gas shells to enhance its operational capacity. The decision was made during a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Council on Monday, as announced by Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
The advisor highlighted the necessity of equipping the BGB with advanced tools to address issues like smuggling, infiltration, and maintaining law and order in border areas. "It is crucial to strengthen the BGB’s capabilities to ensure border security. New equipment, such as sound grenades and tear gas shells, will be provided to the force promptly," he stated.
The move comes after recent incidents of border tension, particularly in Chapainawabganj. On Saturday morning, January 18, tensions escalated at the Kiranganj border when members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Indian civilians allegedly crossed into Bangladeshi territory. Reports indicate that they cut down mango trees, leading to a confrontation with BGB personnel and local residents. During the altercation, a hand grenade explosion from the Indian side injured at least five Bangladeshi farmers.
Responding to inquiries about the lack of non-lethal tools previously, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, "Weapons were traditionally provided at the border, but BGB did not have access to sound grenades or tear gas. This will now change to ensure better control in critical situations."
The decision aims to fortify border management and prevent further escalations, ensuring the safety of both border communities and national security.
