DHAKA, Jan 24, (V7N)—An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Dhaka and various regions of Bangladesh at 1:23 am on Friday, triggering panic among residents. Many people reported being alarmed by the late-night tremor.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake originated in Wazin, Manipur, India, at a depth of 106 kilometers. The tremor was also felt in neighboring Myanmar.
This marks the latest in a series of seismic events recorded in January. Earlier tremors were felt on January 3 and 7, with varying magnitudes and intensities. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department also reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake on January 21, originating in Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, India.
The repeated seismic activity this month has raised concerns among citizens and experts regarding the region's vulnerability to earthquakes. The region lies on several active fault lines, making it prone to earthquakes.
Experts are urging authorities to enhance earthquake preparedness and safety measures to mitigate risks in the densely populatedcountry.
