Dhaka, Jan 24 (V7N) – Md. Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, has called on Chinese automobile companies to explore opportunities for establishing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plants in Bangladesh. The appeal was made during his visit to an advanced EV manufacturing plant near Shanghai on Thursday, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Following the factory tour, the Foreign Affairs Advisor met with the Acting Mayor of Shanghai to discuss expanding trade, commerce, and people-to-people exchanges between Dhaka and Shanghai. The Acting Mayor extended an invitation to Bangladesh to participate in the upcoming "Shanghai Tourism Festival", signaling enhanced cultural collaboration between the two cities.
Industrial Collaboration
Touhid Hossain also held talks with the Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce. Discussions highlighted the potential for relocating Chinese manufacturing plants to Bangladesh, particularly to the Chinese Special Economic Zone in Chittagong. This move could boost industrial collaboration and drive economic growth in both nations. Additionally, they discussed the possibility of establishing direct air links between Chittagong and Shanghai, which would facilitate trade and travel.
Bangladesh's Push for Green Technology
The visit underscores Bangladesh's interest in tapping into China's expertise in green technology, particularly in the burgeoning electric vehicle market. Establishing EV manufacturing facilities could significantly contribute to Bangladesh’s efforts to modernize its transport sector and reduce carbon emissions.
Touhid Hossain is scheduled to return home on Friday after concluding his three-day official visit to China. The trip reflects Bangladesh's ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with China, focusing on industrial growth, green technology, and increased connectivity.
