Dhaka, Jan 28 (V7N) — Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed stated that the government has addressed the reasonable demands of railway employees to the extent possible, including overtime and other financial concerns. However, he noted that meeting additional demands remains challenging due to economic constraints.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Government Procurement at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Dr. Ahmed said, “Overtime and related issues for the protesting railway running staff have been allocated 8 to 10 days in advance. Other demands, such as gratuity, require significant funds, which are difficult to raise suddenly.”
The advisor expressed frustration over the ongoing protests despite the government’s efforts. “The reasonable demands of the railway employees have been met as much as possible. Why are they still protesting? We have done as much as is necessary for humanitarian reasons,” he said.
He confirmed that the issue of overtime has been resolved but emphasized that meeting demands beyond this is not feasible given the current economic situation. “The economic situation must be considered,” he added.
On the topic of dearness allowance for government officials and employees, Dr. Ahmed clarified that no decision has been made yet. He noted that the decision to increase allowances for those in foreign missions was made earlier.
Regarding preparations for Ramadan, the advisor assured that the government would ensure sufficient stocks of essential items like rice and wheat to prevent shortages during the holy month.
