Gazipur, Feb 01 (V7N) — A shortage of drinking water and inadequate sanitation facilities has led to difficulties for devotees attending the first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema in Tongi. Over the past two days, many devotees have fallen ill due to the extreme weather conditions—cold nights and scorching heat during the day. At least three people have reportedly died due to various health complications.

On the second day of the Ijtema, thousands of devotees engaged in prayers, zikir, and religious sermons delivered by scholars from home and abroad. Among them, Maulana Khurshed from Pakistan addressed the gathering, inspiring many to continue their devotion. Some groups also prepared meals for their fellow attendees, considering it a part of their worship.

A long queue was observed at the free medical center adjacent to the Ijtema Maidan, where devotees sought treatment for stomach issues, kidney complications, heart problems, and back pain. While emergency medical services were provided free of charge, critically ill patients were referred to specialized hospitals.

At a press conference, Ijtema organizers expressed gratitude to the government for its support but lamented the damage to Tablighi Jamaat's reputation following the December 17 attack by followers of Maulana Saad. Top cleric Kefayet Ullah Azhari stated that despite rumors discouraging attendance, the first phase of the Ijtema has seen the spontaneous participation of millions.

The first phase of the Ijtema will conclude with the final prayer at 9 AM on Sunday, February 2. The second phase will begin on February 3, featuring devotees from 22 remaining districts who follow Maulana Jobair's sect.
