Dhaka, Feb 04 (V7N) The interim government's Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has sought Canada's assistance in recovering billions of dollars allegedly laundered from Bangladesh to the North American country.

During a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh at the Jamuna State Guest House on Tuesday (February 4), Dr. Yunus called for cooperation in repatriating stolen funds.

Allegations Against Sheikh Hasina's Associates

Dr. Yunus claimed that individuals and politicians linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime had laundered billions of stolen funds to various countries, including Canada. He specifically mentioned that a portion of these funds was used to purchase luxury properties in Toronto’s ‘Begum Para’, a neighborhood known for housing wealthy expatriates from Bangladesh.

“Your (Canada’s) help is needed to recover the money that the aides of the dictatorship have stolen from the people of Bangladesh and built wealth in Begum Para. This is the money of our people,” Dr. Yunus stated.

Canada Assures Support for Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Efforts

In response, Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh praised the interim government's anti-corruption drive and assured support in recovering illicitly transferred funds.

“A process is already underway to seize money laundered in Canada from individuals identified by the interim government,” Singh confirmed.

He also expressed Canada’s appreciation for Bangladesh’s democratic transition efforts, stating:

“We support the great work you are doing. We appreciate the progress you have made in this work and are eager to assist in this regard.”

Canada-Bangladesh Trade and Investment Relations

Apart from money laundering issues, discussions also covered trade expansion and investment opportunities. Dr. Yunus encouraged more Canadian investment in Bangladesh and invited Canadian companies to establish manufacturing facilities in the country.

He also urged Ottawa to open a visa office in Dhaka, citing the increasing number of Bangladeshi students and professionals migrating to Canada.

The Canadian High Commissioner revealed that a Canadian minister is expected to visit Bangladesh soon to explore bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

The meeting was also attended by Senior Secretary and Chief Coordinator for SDGs, Lamia Morshed.
