Dhaka, Feb 12 (V7N) – Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, visited the notorious 'Aynaghor' detention centers, previously linked to alleged enforced disappearances and torture under the autocratic rule of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government. Yunus was accompanied by victims of disappearances and representatives from local and international media.
The visit took place on Wednesday morning, beginning at the Joint Interrogation Cell of the Directorate General of Defence Intelligence (DGFI) and CPC-3 of RAB-2. The delegation later inspected the Task Force Intelligence Center at RAB headquarters, where many of the alleged abuses were believed to have taken place.
During the Awami League's tenure, numerous reports surfaced accusing the government of detaining political opponents and dissenters in secret locations without trial. Many of these detainees were later found to have been held in facilities now known as 'Aynaghor' (Mirror House). While some victims eventually returned home and recounted harrowing tales of torture, many remain missing to this day.
The 'Disappearance Investigation Commission', established by the interim government, has identified several such secret detention centers under the control of various state security forces. The commission continues to investigate these sites to uncover the extent of the abuses and locate missing individuals.
On January 19, the press wing of the Chief Advisor confirmed that the Disappearance Investigation Commission held a meeting with Professor Yunus, where they briefed him on the progress of their investigations. During the Awami League era, it was reported that detainees were held in these undisclosed facilities under conditions violating both domestic and international human rights laws.
The Chief Advisor’s visit to these facilities marks a significant step in the interim government’s efforts to address past human rights abuses and bring justice to the victims and their families.
