Dubai, Feb 14 (V7N) — Bangladesh’s interim government plans to hold national elections as soon as possible, potentially by December this year, said Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

Speaking at the interactive plenary session of the World Government Summit (WGS) in Dubai on Thursday, Dr. Yunus emphasized the government’s commitment to reforms and consensus-building. The session was moderated by CNN journalist Becky Anderson.

"We have formulated reforms for 15 different sectors, including law and order, the police, the constitution, and elections," Dr. Yunus stated. "Various reform commissions have submitted reports with recommendations, and now we are working to build consensus."

He added, "We are engaging in discussions with political parties to finalize a ‘charter’ based on the recommendations everyone agrees upon. Once that is implemented, we will proceed with elections, which could take place as early as December."

Dr. Yunus described the challenges facing Bangladesh, noting that the economy, governance, and administrative systems were in disarray when the interim government took over.

"We are gradually restoring order. The banking system had completely collapsed, with $16 billion laundered. Our foreign reserves have hit rock bottom. Fixing the economy is our first priority, followed by law and order and institutional reforms," he said.

After the transition to an elected government, Dr. Yunus plans to return to his previous work. "That is what I enjoy," he remarked.

Dr. Yunus left for Dubai on Wednesday evening from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by UAE Sports Minister Ahmed Belhoul Al Falasi.
