Dhaka, Feb 17 (V7N) – Mostafa Sarwar Farooqui, advisor to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and renowned producer, has expressed deep disappointment over the recent controversy surrounding sanitary napkins at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
In a Facebook post late Sunday night, Farooqui wrote,
"Sanitary napkins are a very natural thing. The government and various organizations have been working to raise awareness about women's health and hygiene. Given this, the debate surrounding it at the book fair is truly painful."
He extended his solidarity with those who criticized the Bangla Academy’s decision, stating,
"We stand with all brothers and sisters who have expressed their anger on this matter. Your frustration and anger are ours too."
Following the backlash, Bangla Academy issued a statement announcing that free sanitary napkins will now be available next to the women’s washrooms at the fairgrounds.
Earlier, the academy had stopped the display and sale of sanitary napkins under the ‘Stay Safe’ initiative, following objections from certain individuals who labeled them as "secret products". This led to the closure of two stalls at the fair.
However, after public outcry, Bangla Academy clarified its stance and confirmed that free sanitary napkin distribution will continue at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
