Dhaka, Feb 18 (V7N) – Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, the local government advisor to the interim government, has emphasized the need to hold local government elections before the national election.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon after the final working session of the three-day District Commissioners' Conference, he stated that while this is his personal opinion, the National Consensus Commission will make the final decision.

Bhuiyan strongly criticized the former Awami League government, stating that it is essential to ensure accountability for the genocide committed across the country.

He also noted that most Awami League leaders and activists are now in hiding. However, he clarified that those who have not committed crimes will have the opportunity to apologize and participate in local elections, while those involved in genocide will be barred from contesting.

Addressing governance challenges, Bhuiyan pointed out that the absence of elected representatives at the local level has created difficulties for district administrators, who do not want to continue performing additional duties.

He stressed that discussions are ongoing about quickly holding elections to restore public representation in local government. If elections are not held, an administrator may have to be appointed to oversee local governance.

Bhuiyan’s remarks underscore the interim government's focus on restructuring governance, ensuring accountability, and preparing for future elections.
