Dhaka, Feb 21 (V7N) – Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has emphasized the importance of the mother tongue in achieving the Three Zeros theory and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He stated that true inclusivity is only possible when linguistic diversity is respected and preserved.
Dr. Yunus made these remarks while virtually attending the silver jubilee celebration of International Mother Language Day at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, on Friday (February 21).
Mother tongue is central to human identity: Dr. Yunus stressed that the essence of personal and cultural expression lies in one’s native language.
Bangladesh’s history is deeply tied to language: He cited events such as the Language Movement of 1952 and the July Uprising, where linguistic and political aspirations played a crucial role.
Linguistic diversity strengthens nations: He pointed out that language is not just a means of communication but also a reflection of ethnic, cultural, social, and political identity.
No language should be allowed to disappear: Dr. Yunus called for global action to protect endangered languages, urging UNESCO to take an active role in their preservation and promotion.
Mother tongue is key to inclusive development: He linked language preservation with the ability to ensure sustainable development without leaving anyone behind.
Dr. Yunus’s remarks come at a time when many indigenous languages worldwide face extinction. His speech reinforced Bangladesh’s commitment to linguistic and cultural preservation on the global stage.
