New Delhi, Feb 21 (V7N) – The 55th India-Bangladesh Border Security Force (BSF) meeting concluded in Delhi after four days of discussions, but the two sides failed to resolve long-standing disputes.

According to a report by Deutsche Welle, the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) strongly objected to India's installation of barbed wire fencing within 150 yards of the international border, while India raised concerns over infiltration and smuggling activities from Bangladesh.

Major Points of Discussion

1. Border Fencing Dispute

Bangladesh has alleged that India is building barbed wire fencing within 150 yards of the international border pillar, violating international border laws. The issue recently escalated in Sabdalpur village near Malda, creating a tense situation. BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui reiterated that any construction within this restricted zone requires mutual discussions and approval.

However, BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chowdhury defended the fencing, stating it is necessary for border security. India proposed a joint border management plan to strengthen security.

2. Infiltration and Smuggling Allegations

India accused Bangladesh of failing to curb illegal infiltration and smuggling of arms across the border. In response, Bangladesh questioned the movement of armed criminals near the Indian border and called for stronger cooperation to address cross-border crimes.

3. Indian Insurgent Group (IIG) Presence

India urged Bangladesh to take action against Indian Insurgent Groups (IIGs) allegedly operating from Bangladesh. It was suggested that these groups are planning terrorist attacks in India.

4. Water Management Issues

Bangladesh proposed installing a water purification plant on the Agartala border and discussed the equitable distribution of border river water.

Despite lengthy discussions, no definitive solutions were reached. However, the two countries agreed to continue dialogue and take action based on consensus.

At the joint press conference following the meeting, both sides assured that border security cooperation would continue, but sources confirmed that the key disputes remain unresolved.
