Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N) – On the occasion of National Martyrs' Day, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury paid tribute by laying wreaths at the military cemetery on Tuesday morning.

At 9 AM, he placed floral wreaths at the graves of martyred military officers and personnel at Peelkhana in Banani Military Cemetery.

Nation Honors the Martyrs

Following the Home Affairs Advisor, the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force also laid wreaths in tribute. Senior officials from the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) followed suit.

Later, families of the martyrs paid their respects by laying wreaths, observing a minute of silence, and offering prayers for the departed souls.

Commemorating the 2009 Peelkhana Tragedy

February 25 and 26 mark the tragic anniversary of the 2009 Peelkhana mutiny, during which 74 people, including 57 senior army officers, lost their lives at the then-BDR (now BGB) headquarters in Dhaka. Among them was Major General Shakil Ahmed, the Director General of BDR at the time.

First Official Recognition of National Martyrs' Day

This year, for the first time, February 25 is being officially observed as 'National Martyrs' Day'. The decision was announced in a Cabinet Division circular issued on Sunday, marking a significant step in honoring the memory of the fallen.

This day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made and underscores the nation's commitment to justice, remembrance, and national security.
