Surrey, July 12 (V7N) – Kap’s Café, the newly launched restaurant by popular Indian comedian and actor Kapil Sharma, was targeted in a gunfire attack late Wednesday night. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), at least eight shots were fired at the café, located in the 8400 block of 120 Street, Surrey. The police received the report of gunfire at around 1:50 a.m., and responded swiftly, discovering that the shots had damaged the property while staff members were inside. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed that the motive of the attack remains undetermined, with Surrey Police's Frontline Investigative Support Team (FLIS) now leading the probe. The investigation is also exploring potential connections to other recent extortion incidents in the region. However, no suspect information has been released so far.
In a shocking twist, Harjit Singh Laddi, a member of the proscribed terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), claimed responsibility for the attack. Laddi, along with another individual, Toofan Singh, cited Kapil Sharma’s allegedly humorous remarks about the Nihang Sikh community as the motive behind the shooting. The Nihangs are a traditionalist sect within Sikhism, known for their distinctive attire and adherence to martial practices.
Kapil Sharma, widely known for his comedy shows, had only recently opened Kap’s Café with his wife, Ginni Chatrath. The attack has raised concerns over rising tensions within the South Asian community in the area, as extortion attempts and threats have been on the rise.
This attack follows a string of extortion-related incidents, with the RCMP charging two individuals earlier this month in connection with extortion attempts against local business owners in Surrey.
The police continue to investigate the incident, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
