Dhaka, Mar 01 (V7N) – The moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan has been sighted in the sky of Bangladesh. As a result, fasting will commence on Sunday (March 2), while Tarawih prayers will begin tonight (March 1, Saturday).
The National Moon Sighting Committee made this announcement following a meeting at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Saturday evening.
Significance of Ramadan:
- Global Observance: Around 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide observe fasting and worship throughout Ramadan.
- Month of Mercy: Ramadan is a period of special divine blessings, where Muslims practice sacrifice, restraint, and devotion to seek Allah’s pleasure.
- Revelation of the Quran: The Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in this blessed month.
- One of Islam’s Five Pillars: Fasting in Ramadan is obligatory for all physically capable Muslims.
Traditional Moon Sighting:
For centuries, Muslims have determined the start of Ramadan and the dates of Eid celebrations through moon sighting. The beginning of the month and the start of Tarawih prayers are confirmed based on this practice.
Muslims across Bangladesh will now begin their spiritual journey of fasting, prayer, and worship, joining the global Muslim community in this sacred observance.
