Dhaka, Mar 06 (V7N) – The Information Rights Forum has proposed establishing the Information Commission as an independent constitutional institution to ensure the full implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The forum has also recommended amendments to several sections of the law to strengthen transparency and accountability.
The proposal was presented during a press conference at the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) auditorium in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, on Thursday (March 6).
Speaking at the event, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman criticized the interim government, stating, "The Information Commission has not been effective in the country for six months. This is rare in the world and embarrassing for the country."
Additionally, Badiul Alam Majumder, editor of Sujan for Good Governance, proposed bringing political parties under the purview of the RTI Act. He stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in political parties, warning that a lack of oversight could lead to a repeat of past governance failures.
The forum’s recommendations highlight the growing demand for institutional reforms to ensure unrestricted access to information and greater government accountability in Bangladesh.
