Dhaka, Mar 12 (V7N) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will arrive in Bangladesh tomorrow afternoon, March 13. He is scheduled for a three-day visit, during which he will meet with senior government officials and visit the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar alongside Principal Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The visit was confirmed by Dr. Yunus's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Wednesday. The briefing highlighted the key events of Guterres's visit, which will begin at 5 p.m. tomorrow when he arrives in Dhaka.

On March 14, Guterres is set to meet with the Foreign Affairs Advisor and High Representative at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka. He will also meet with Dr. Muhammad Yunus at his office before traveling together to Cox's Bazar, where they will visit the Rohingya refugee camps. During this visit, they will join an iftar with 100,000 Rohingya refugees. Dr. Yunus will also inaugurate a model mosque in Cox’s Bazar as part of the program.

Shafiqul Alam emphasized that the issue of peace and stability in Myanmar’s Rakhine region, essential for the repatriation of the Rohingya, will be a priority in the discussions between Dr. Yunus and Antonio Guterres. Dr. Yunus has been actively highlighting the Rohingya crisis on the international stage and aims to bring global attention to the issue. Alam expressed hopes that the visit would lead to increased humanitarian support for the Rohingya, as aid has been declining in recent months.

This will be Guterres's second visit to Bangladesh. His first visit was in 2017 during the height of the Rohingya crisis. During this visit, Guterres will also meet with the National Consensus Commission, and a press briefing will be arranged to address the media.

Dr. Yunus and Guterres's joint visit is expected to bring renewed attention to the ongoing plight of the Rohingya and advocate for more global support for the refugees in Bangladesh.
