State Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mohammad Ali Arafat, emphasized the importance of regulation to protect professional journalists, drawing reference to France's regulatory mechanisms aimed at combating misinformation and disinformation. Following a meeting with French Ambassador to Bangladesh, Marie Masdupuy, at his Secretariat office, Arafat underscored the necessity of regulation while acknowledging its potential impact on freedom of speech and media.
Acknowledging the delicate balance between regulation and media freedom, Arafat highlighted France's approach, where regulatory bodies monitor and report on misinformation to the government. He stressed that while regulation may restrict media freedom, it also plays a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of journalism. Arafat emphasized the need for laws and regulations to protect professional journalists, with careful monitoring to prevent misuse.
Commenting on the European Union's laws to combat disinformation, Arafat noted that all countries worldwide have measures in place to address disinformation, indicating a global consensus on the issue. He expressed a commitment to understanding and adopting best practices from European, Western, and neighboring countries in addressing disinformation.
Responding to queries about the European Union's stance on Bangladesh's general elections, Arafat clarified that the EU expressed willingness to collaborate with Bangladesh, contrary to claims of election non-acceptance. He reiterated France's confidence in Bangladesh's people and its commitment to collaborating with the country across various sectors, including countering disinformation.
Arafat also sought cooperation from the French ambassador in facilitating collaboration between Bangladesh's state-owned BTV and France's government-subsidized France24 TV. Ambassador Marie Masdupuy expressed eagerness to support such initiatives.
Regarding the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh's planned strike, Arafat urged restraint, indicating ongoing efforts by the ministry to address their concerns. He also addressed the case of Shafiuzzaman Rana, a correspondent for the daily Desh Rupantor, stating that the Information Commission is investigating the incident to ensure appropriate action.
Ambassador Masdupuy highlighted the discussion's focus on cooperation between France and Bangladesh in combating disinformation, promoting freedom of expression, and enhancing journalistic professionalism.
