Amid escalating clashes between government forces and insurgents in Myanmar, 29 members of Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) sought sanctuary in Bangladesh today (March 11).

Confirming the incident, Shariful Islam, the communication officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), informed The Business Standard that the armed BGP personnel arrived from Angthapaya Camp of Myanmar Border Guard Force through the border area of Jamchari BOP under Naikhongchhari BGB's Battalion (11 BGB) in Bandarban district.

"Upon receiving the report, multiple BGB teams reached the location and began the process of disarming the BGP members," he stated.

Nurul Abser, chairman of Naikhongchhari Sadar union parishad, disclosed that the armed BGP personnel crossed the border between pillar No. 45-46 of Jamchhari ward No. 8 around 12:130 pm and sought refuge in a lemon orchard.

He further mentioned that residents of the Jamchhari border area reported intense fighting and the sounds of mortar explosions since Monday morning.

Rebel factions in Arakan state have been locked in confrontations with Myanmar's military junta since Saturday (February 3), primarily concerning control of a border camp. The ongoing conflict has been marked by persistent gunfire, mortar shells, and rocket explosions.

Last month, over 300 BGP personnel sought shelter in Bangladesh following similar clashes.
