Dhaka, Jun 04 (V7N) – The establishment of a United Nations human rights office in Dhaka is final and preparations are underway to launch operations on a limited scale soon, said UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis.

She made the remarks while speaking at a ‘DCAB Talk’ event organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club on Wednesday (June 4) morning.

Regarding the much-discussed humanitarian corridor between Bangladesh and Myanmar, Lewis noted that formal consent from both countries is essential before the UN can become involved in its implementation.

“There has been no formal discussion on the corridor yet. The UN stands ready to help, but both nations must first agree,” she stated.

Speaking on Bangladesh's ongoing political reform process, Lewis said that the UN supports the reform initiatives of the interim government, emphasizing that elections are an internal matter of Bangladesh.

“The UN has no role in domestic politics,” she added. “However, we are working closely with the Election Commission to support fair, acceptable, and participatory elections.”

Lewis also expressed the UN’s satisfaction with the work of the Consensus Commission, which is playing a key role in facilitating political dialogue.

Concluding her remarks, Lewis reiterated the UN’s commitment to standing beside the people of Bangladesh:

“The United Nations will always remain a partner and friend of the Bangladeshi people in their journey toward development, peace, and human rights.”
