London, UK, June 13 (V7N) – Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, today indicated that the next general elections could potentially be held in the week before the start of the holy month of Ramadan in February 2026, provided that all necessary preparations are completed. He made this remark during a meeting with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at a London hotel this morning.

Their highly anticipated meeting, described as being held in a "very cordial atmosphere," concluded with a joint statement issued by the Chief Adviser and the acting BNP Chairman.

During the discussions, Tarique Rahman proposed to Chief Adviser Yunus that the polls be arranged before the next Ramadan. The statement also noted that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia shares the view that holding the election during that period would be preferable.

Responding to the proposal, Professor Yunus reiterated his earlier announcement that the elections would be held in the first half of April 2026. However, he then offered the possibility of an earlier date, stating, "If all preparations are completed, the polls could be organised in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026. In that case, it will be necessary to achieve sufficient progress on reforms and trials by that time."

Tarique Rahman reportedly welcomed this position from the Chief Adviser and extended his thanks on behalf of the party. Professor Yunus, in turn, thanked Tarique Rahman for the fruitful discussion.

This development suggests a potential compromise on the election timeline, linking an earlier poll date to the accelerated progress of reforms and judicial processes. The exact implications for Bangladesh's political landscape remain to be seen as the nation heads towards its next general election.
