Dhaka, June 26 (V7N) – Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has emphasized that public awareness is crucial to eradicating drug abuse in society, stating that law enforcement alone is not enough.
He made these remarks at a program marking International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Thursday (June 26) afternoon.
“Drugs are not only a domestic issue but a global crisis,” said the Advisor. “Its widespread impact threatens everything from law and order to the economy. The youth of our nation is being devastated by this menace, ultimately hampering national progress.”
He also noted with concern that children and women are increasingly being exploited in drug smuggling operations.
The Home Affairs Advisor reaffirmed the government’s strong stance against drug abuse, saying, “We are determined to eliminate drugs from society. If we want to build a prosperous and developed nation, we must protect our youth from this threat.”
He further added that the government is planning to build separate rehabilitation-oriented prisons at the divisional level specifically for drug addicts, as part of a broader national strategy to combat narcotics.
