Dhaka, Aug 12 (V7N)- The Nationalist Lawyers Forum, representing BNP-affiliated lawyers, held a protest march and rally at the Supreme Court premises on Tuesday (August 12) afternoon to condemn the chaos that erupted during the bail hearing of former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque.
The forum accused pro-Awami League elements of deliberately creating disturbances in the judicial process to destabilize the judiciary. Forum leaders alleged that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently residing in Delhi, is orchestrating a conspiracy to undermine the judiciary and the country by funneling thousands of crores of taka through foreign channels. They also claimed that some senior lawyers are acting on her behalf.
The BNP lawyers demanded justice for a state lawyer who was reportedly assaulted during the court proceedings and called on the Chief Justice to ensure security for all lawyers.
The turmoil unfolded on Monday (August 11) during the hearing of bail and case dismissal applications filed by ABM Khairul Haque. A scuffle broke out between pro-Awami League supporters and state lawyers present in court.
Earlier, Khairul Haque was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 and remanded to jail the same night. The arrest followed a case filed at Fatulla Police Station in Narayanganj on July 29, accusing him of nullifying the caretaker government system, delivering illegal verdicts, and fabricating fake judgments.
