Dhaka, Aug 30 (V7N) – Efforts to peacefully resolve a violent confrontation between rival political groups in Dhaka’s Kakrail area failed Friday night, prompting law enforcement to resort to baton charges and use of force. Several people were injured, including five members of the Bangladesh Army, according to an official statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The incident occurred as tensions between two political parties escalated into a violent clash in the capital's Kakrail area, spreading to adjacent neighborhoods such as Bijoynagar and Nayapaltan. According to a joint statement issued Friday night by the Bangladesh Army and the ISPR, initial attempts to de-escalate the situation were led by the police. However, as the violence intensified, military support was called in to restore order.
The statement detailed that law enforcement initially urged both groups to remain calm, vacate the area, and resolve differences within the framework of existing laws. Despite repeated appeals, a segment of political activists ignored the warnings and continued their aggressive actions. Around 9:00 PM, the situation escalated further when a torch procession led to more violent clashes, including stone pelting and attempts to set fire to nearby structures.
As the unrest grew, public movement across the surrounding areas came to a halt, severely affecting civilian life and causing widespread disruption. In response, the combined forces were compelled to act with force to protect public safety and infrastructure. The ISPR confirmed that five army personnel were injured during the operation.
The government reiterated its "zero tolerance" stance on mob violence, emphasizing that the protection of citizens and public order remains a top priority. The army echoed this message, stating that it will maintain a firm position against any acts of violence to ensure peace and stability across the country.
No details were immediately provided on arrests or further legal action following the incident. Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of the injured or the political affiliations of those involved in the violence. However, the government has signaled that any future unrest will be met with swift and decisive measures.
Further investigations are ongoing, and an internal review of the response by both police and military units is expected.
