Dhaka, Sep 18 (V7N) – Senior Secretary of the Election Commission, Akhtar Ahmed, has said that the Commission will follow the court’s instructions regarding disputes over the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.
Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission Bhaban on Thursday afternoon, he acknowledged that protests have taken place in different parts of the country over the issue.
Akhtar Ahmed noted that Section 7 of the EC Act states that cases related to delimitation are not admissible. “However, filing a writ is a fundamental right of the people. So far, 18 writs have been filed in the High Court regarding constituency delimitation. We have faith in the court and will wait for its instructions,” he said.
Regarding expatriate voting, the EC Secretary explained that voters must provide their address through the app to receive ballots. Ballots will be sent in large envelopes and will only display the candidate’s symbol, not the name. Voters must post them at the nearest post office. He added that those unable to vote due to professional obligations must register as expatriates.
Akhtar Ahmed also stated that citizens turning 18 by October 31 will be added to the voter list. Additionally, he said that a European Union delegation will visit Bangladesh on September 22 to discuss preparations for the upcoming elections.
