Dhaka, Sep 21 (V7N) – The decision on whether Bangladesh’s upcoming elections will be held under the existing system or through proportional representation (PR) will be determined by political parties, said Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief advisor. He added that the government intends to keep its statements on this matter to a minimum.
He made the remarks on Sunday at The Daily Star’s conference room in Karwan Bazar during the presentation of a survey conducted by research organization Innovation.
According to the survey findings, 56 percent of respondents were unaware of the PR system. Meanwhile, 21.8 percent supported the introduction of PR, while 22.2 percent opposed it.
A total of 10,413 people participated in the survey. Among them, 69.9 percent expressed confidence that the interim government would be able to organize a fair election. However, the study noted that religious minority communities showed comparatively less optimism regarding the government’s ability to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
