New York, Sep 23 (V7N) – Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus met with the family of Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-origin officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD) who was killed in a gun attack in Manhattan earlier this year. He conveyed his deep condolences and paid tribute to the late officer’s sacrifice.

On Monday night (local time), Didarul’s family members met the Chief Advisor at a hotel in New York. During the meeting, Dr. Yunus presented a crest to the family as a mark of honor.

Present were Didarul’s father Mohammad Abdur Rab, mother Minara Begum, sons Ayhan Islam and Azhan Islam, brother Kamrul Hasan, nephew Adian Hasan, sister Nadima Begum, and uncle Ahmed Jamal Uddin. Members of the Chief Advisor’s entourage, including NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Joint Convener Dr. Tasneem Zara, also attended.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Yunus said:
"I was shocked when I read about the incident in the newspaper. I could not understand how it happened. On television, I saw thousands of people gather for his final farewell in New York. He received the respect and love of many people. When planning this visit to New York, we felt we must meet you."

Family members recalled that Didarul Islam, who joined the NYPD in 2021, served in the 47th Precinct in the Bronx and was admired as a responsible and dedicated officer. He is survived by two young sons.

It may be noted that on July 28, a gunman stormed a corporate building on Park Avenue in Manhattan and opened fire indiscriminately before killing himself. Officer Didarul Islam was fatally shot while attempting to stop the attacker, sustaining 8–10 bullet wounds, according to his family.
