Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq announced plans to formulate a new law on Artificial Intelligence (AI) by September, highlighting the necessity for Bangladesh to address the transformative impact of AI on a global scale.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting on AI law at the Secretariat, Minister Huq emphasized the importance of considering the implications of AI advancements both domestically and internationally.
Accompanied by State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak, Huq stressed the significance of informed decision-making in crafting legislation, citing the need for expertise and knowledge in this evolving field.
"We believe Bangladesh should establish legislation concerning the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, echoing global initiatives," Huq remarked.
Detailing the roadmap for the proposed law, Huq revealed that discussions have commenced, with a target to finalize the draft by September. He underscored the dynamic nature of the subject matter, indicating that the outline of the law remains subject to refinement based on ongoing observations and consultations.
While refraining from disclosing specific details of the law's outline, Huq highlighted its overarching objectives, emphasizing the focus on human rights protection and societal welfare.
State Minister Palak echoed Huq's sentiments, noting the timeliness of the decision to draft AI legislation. Palak outlined the strategic imperative of incorporating AI into Bangladesh's long-term development agenda, particularly in achieving the vision of a "smart Bangladesh" by 2041.
Highlighting the collaborative efforts involved in the decision-making process, Palak underscored the importance of expert consultations and strategic planning in navigating the complexities of AI governance.
