New Delhi, Nov 18 (V7N) – India has issued an immediate response to the death sentence handed down to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a war crimes case. In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs said India is aware of the verdict announced by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal concerning Sheikh Hasina. As a close neighbor, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including the country’s peace, democracy, inclusivity, and stability. The statement added that India will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders to this end.
The verdict was delivered by a three-member judicial panel led by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder of the International Crimes Tribunal-1. Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death for the second charge in the case related to crimes against humanity during the July uprising. She received a life sentence for the first charge.
The court also handed the death penalty to former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Additionally, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Mamun received a five-year prison term for assisting in revealing the truth as a prosecution witness.
