Dhaka, Jan 01 (V7N) — The year 2025 ended as a historic chapter for Bangladesh, witnessing significant events including political reforms, mob violence, a deadly earthquake, the return of Tarique Rahman from exile, and the passing of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Amidst these momentous developments, the nation welcomed the New Year 2026 with a mixture of celebration and reflection.

At midnight on Wednesday, the sky above Dhaka lit up with colorful fireworks, signaling the arrival of the New Year. However, this year’s celebrations coincided with a three-day state mourning period declared after the death of Begum Khaleda Zia on December 30. The entire nation remained in a state of grief since her passing, and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had imposed strict regulations to maintain decorum.

A DMP public notice had specifically prohibited all forms of fireworks, crackers, lanterns, and gas balloons across Dhaka during the mourning period. The notice also requested that no open-air cultural events, DJ parties, or processions be organized. Despite these restrictions, fireworks and colorful displays were observed across the city as the clock struck midnight, reflecting both public enthusiasm and a subtle defiance of the official ban.

Heightened security measures were evident in areas such as Dhaka University, where all campus entrances were heavily guarded, and no external visitors or vehicles were allowed to enter, ensuring safety during New Year celebrations.

The year 2025 had been particularly eventful for Bangladesh. On November 21, a powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake centered in Narsingdi claimed ten lives and injured hundreds, leaving a lasting impact on local communities. Later in the year, the country witnessed the return of BNP leader Tarique Rahman from a prolonged exile. The year concluded with the nation mourning the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, blending grief with the traditional hope and optimism of New Year festivities.

As Bangladesh welcomed 2026, citizens experienced a spectrum of emotions—celebration, reflection, and remembrance—marking the start of the new year with both solemnity and anticipation for the future.
