In Mongla, Bagerhat, a bulk carrier named MV Safiya has overturned, carrying 6,000 sacks of rice designated for the needy ahead of Eid. The incident occurred following a collision with MV Shahajada-6, a lighter cargo ship, in the Poshur River near Mongla port on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Mongla River Police Officer-in-Charge SI Sayed Fakhrul Islam confirmed the seizure of MV Shahajada-6, which collided with MV Safiya. He stated that MV Safiya, transporting government rice from Khulna to Mongla food warehouse, sank after the collision. Despite the mishap, the five crew members onboard managed to reach safety onshore. Recovery efforts to retrieve the submerged rice cargo were scheduled to commence on Monday morning.
