The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has proposed a decrease of 3 paisa per kilometer in bus fares, attributing it to the decline in diesel prices.
However, bus owners raised objections, citing that most tickets have already been sold and pointing out other rising expenses besides fuel costs.
They argued for a post-Eid adjustment in fares, factoring in not just fuel prices but also other operational expenses.
During a meeting chaired by BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad, the proposal suggested reducing intercity bus fares from Tk 2.15 to Tk 2.12 per kilometer and city bus fares from Tk 2.45 to Tk 2.42 per kilometer.
Mashiur Rahman Ranga, President of the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association, emphasized the need to consider various factors besides fuel prices, such as additional expenses related to bus maintenance and fuel consumption during traffic jams.
On the other hand, Advocate Humayun Kabir, General Secretary of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh, advocated for a larger reduction of 5 paisa per kilometer, stating that a 3-paisa reduction wouldn't have a significant impact.
