Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nofel has initiated a proposal to extend the age limit for entering government jobs in Bangladesh to 35 years, with an additional allowance up to 37 years for individuals eligible under various quotas. This recommendation aligns with international standards and reflects the increased life expectancy in Bangladesh, which has risen from 57 to 73 years since the last adjustment in 1991.
The minister’s proposal is grounded in the need to adapt to global benchmarks and to foster a skilled workforce capable of competing in the international job market. Citing examples from neighboring South Asian countries where the age limits for job applications are considerably higher, Nofel underscores the importance of such a policy change for national development and employment opportunities.
The current age limit for government service stands at 30 years, with certain quotas allowing up to 32 years. However, the proposed increase would bring Bangladesh’s policies in line with those of approximately 162 countries worldwide, where the minimum age limit for applying for jobs is at least 35 years.
This move is seen as a strategic step towards reducing unemployment and building a ‘developed smart Bangladesh’ by providing ample opportunities for the youth to acquire skills that meet international standards.
