A three-member team from the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), led by Additional Commissioner Harunor Rashid, arrived in India on Sunday to investigate the murder of lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata on May 13.

The team, which includes Deputy Commissioner of Wari Division (detective) Abdul Ahad and Additional Deputy Commissioner Shahidur Rahman, flew to Kolkata in the morning, according to Faruk Hossain, deputy commissioner (media wing) of DMP.

Previously, a four-member team from West Bengal CID had come to Bangladesh to investigate the killing and had interrogated three suspects arrested there. The DB team traveled to India after the West Bengal CID team completed their portion of the investigation.

The DB officials plan to interrogate the suspects arrested by their Indian counterparts and visit the murder site to gather evidence. They will also share their findings with the concerned officials in Kolkata.

The Jhenaidah-4 MP, Anwarul Azim Anar, had crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for medical treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The next day, Anar left to see a doctor around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas indicated that he went to Delhi and would call if necessary. Since then, Anar was unreachable by phone, and the government eventually confirmed his death on May 22, based on information from Indian police.
