Dr. Shahidul Alam Returns Honorary Doctorate in Protest Against University's Stance on Palestine
June 3-V7N, Dhaka: Renowned Bangladeshi photographer, writer, teacher, and activist, Dr. Shahidul Alam, has announced his decision to return the Honorary Doctorate bestowed upon him by the University of the Arts London (UAL). This move comes as a protest against UAL's perceived anti-Palestinian stance.
Drik Picture Library, on the occasion of Dr. Alam's 69th birthday, released a statement confirming his decision to return the accolade. Dr. Alam received the Honorary Doctorate from UAL on July 8, 2022, at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
In his statement, Dr. Alam expressed his initial acceptance of the honor due to UAL's commitment to academic freedom and freedom of expression, despite subsequent concerns. He highlighted the appointment of James Purnell, an avowed Zionist, as Vice Chancellor, which he believes diverges from the university's earlier stance.
Dr. Alam cited student concerns regarding UAL's partnerships with Israeli-affiliated companies and institutions, alleging complicity in Israel's occupation and apartheid policies. Consequently, he notified Stephen Cross, Dean of Media at UAL London College of Communication, of his decision to return the Honorary Doctorate.
Dr. Shahidul Alam, a graduate of the University of Liverpool and the University of London, is celebrated for his contributions to photography and activism. He founded the Drik Picture Library and the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in Dhaka, as well as the esteemed Chobi Mela International Photography Festival in Asia, where he serves as director.
