Ukhiya June 19,(V7N)- The incident of landslides in the Rohingya camps of Ukhiya from midnight on Tuesday until Wednesday morning affected camps numbered 1, 8, 9, 10, and 14. Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation, Mizanur Rahman confirmed the truth.

He further stated that one person died in camp number 1, one in camp number 8, three in camp number 9, four in camp number 10, and one in camp number 14.

The deceased were Abul Kalam (57), husband of Salima Khatun (42), their son Abu Meher (24), and Abu Meher's wife Jaynab Bibi (19) from Balukhali Camp 10. In addition, from Keranihat village in Chittagong, Ali Juhur's son Hosen Ahmad (50) and his wife Anwara Begum (32) were residing in Ukhiya Camp 9. They were among those killed.

Salman (3), son of Mohammad Jamal from Block I-9 of Ukhiya Camp 9, and Harez (4), son of Anwar from Block 8 East of Balukhali Camp in Ukhiya were also among the deceased. Abdul Karim (12), son of Shah Alam from Choyakhali village of Palongkhali Union in Ukhiya, and Putuni (34), daughter of Sultan Ahmad from Block F-5 of Lambasia Rohingya Camp in Ukhiya, were also killed.

Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Amir Jafar of Ukhiya said, 'On Wednesday night, landslides occurred at Panbazar and Hakimpada of camps 9 and 10, causing the collapse of several houses due to heavy rainfall. One Bangladeshi and five others died in Panbazar Camp, and four died in Hakimpada Camp. The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to the Upazila administration.'

Gofur Uddin Chowdhury, chairman of Ukhiya's Palangkhali Union Parishad, stated, 'Due to heavy rain around 3 a.m., a wall collapsed outside the fencing of camp 14, leading to the death of Abdul Karim (12), son of Shah Alam, a local resident of Chorakhola area.'

Ukhiya Police Battalion (APBN) Chief, DIG Amir Jafar, confirmed the truth. He further said that landslides occurred in Panbazar and Hakimpada areas of camps 9 and 10 early Wednesday, resulting in the collapse of several settlements. One person died in Panbazar Camp, including five Bangladeshis, and four in Hakimpada Camp. The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to the Upazila administration for autopsy.

Local school student Abdul Karim's body was taken home. Local Upazila Executive Officer Tanvir Hossain said that Tk. 10,000 was given from Ukhiya Upazila administration to bury the bodies of the deceased.

Regarding the incident, Upazila Executive Officer Tanvir Hossain said, 'Seven Rohingyas and two Bangladeshis died in the landslide in Ukhiya.'
