Amidst nationwide protests and escalating tensions in Bangladesh, tragic violence erupted in Savar as clashes involving students, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and political activists claimed the life of 24-year-old Yamin, a student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Mirpur.

Dhaka, July 18 (V7N)- "In Savar, a student lost his life during violent clashes on Thursday involving students, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members, Jubo League, and Chhatra League activists amid a nationwide 'complete shutdown' protest against recent attacks on students, which claimed at least six lives the day before.

The deceased, identified as 24-year-old Yamin, was a student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Mirpur.

Shah Zaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar police station, stated that police are working to gather more information about the victim.

The incident occurred around 2 pm near Mansoor Market at the bus stand, where several individuals, including Yamin, sustained gunshot wounds. Yamin was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was pronounced dead by doctors.

Eyewitnesses recounted that hundreds of students from various schools and colleges had gathered at the Pakiza area near the Savar bus stand on the Dhaka-Aricha highway starting from 11:00 am. Tensions escalated with the presence of police, BGB, and activists from Chhatra League and Jubo League, resulting in clashes involving projectiles.

At approximately 12:30 pm, members of Chhatra League and Jubo League, led by Manjurul Alam Rajib, Chairman of the Savar Upazila Parishad and General Secretary of the Upazila Awami League, congregated in the Pakiza area, advocating for peace through slogans. However, they withdrew as the situation intensified with student resistance. Police responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets, prompting protesters to retaliate with stones.

As of 4 pm, clashes were ongoing near the Savar bus stand on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, with reports indicating that over 100 students have been injured in the violent confrontations since morning."
