Dhaka, July 28 — The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has suffered extensive damages due to attacks on its regional offices in Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Mohakhali, Uttara, and Badda amid the ongoing violence surrounding the quota reform movement. DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam has reported losses exceeding Tk 200 crore.

Violent Attacks on Regional Offices

On Friday afternoon, miscreants targeted and set fire to vehicles at the regional office of the North City Corporation in Mirpur No. 10. Staff members captured images of the destruction from a safe distance. A car driver on the scene described how several assailants armed with sticks ignited each vehicle using petrol. In total, 29 cars were burned, and another 17 were vandalized. Attempts to intervene led to several drivers being beaten and injured by the attackers, who were reportedly youths of various ages.

Simultaneous Attacks Across Multiple Regions

The violence was not isolated to Mirpur. Nearly every regional office in areas like Mohammadpur, Mohakhali, Uttara, and Badda faced attacks around the same time. Similar patterns of young attackers were observed in these incidents.

Significant Damage and Operational Impact

Mayor Atiqul Islam highlighted that the DNCC's operational capacity has been severely affected. The corporation has lost the ability to remove at least 400 tonnes of waste daily due to the destruction of vehicles. Additionally, every street lamp in the affected areas was demolished. The overall damage has been estimated to exceed Tk 200 crore.

Community Center Vandalized

In Mohammadpur, the Souchna Community Center also fell victim to the violence. Miscreants broke the gate, set the building on fire after vandalizing it, and selectively destroyed CCTV cameras.

The DNCC is currently assessing the full extent of the damages and planning recovery efforts to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
